I jumped out of my chair and excused myself. But instead of heading for the bathroom (like I had to pretend in order to leave), I sprinted toward the art tables. When I got there (a little breathless), Counselor Sam was picking up the shirts from the table. Both my shirt and Maxineâs were already gone. I guessed they were in the small stack over his arm.
âWait!â I held up a hand and used the other to press down on a cramp in my side as I caught my breath.
âDonât worry, theyâre dry,â Counselor Sam said. He ran his hand over the horse on Gioâs shirt. âSee?â
I nodded. âYes. I mean, no.â I shook my head and swallowed. âI mean . . . I forgot to put my name on my shirt!â
âThatâs not a problem,â Sam said. âYou know which oneâs yours, donât you?â
I reached for the small stack in his arms. âI do. But Maxine made hers . . . look a lot like mine,â I said, trying to be nice about it. âI donât want them to get mixed up.â
âOh, well, it should be right here.â He quickly rummaged through them. âHere! This is it, isnât?â
âIt looks like mine,â I said hesitatingly. âUhhh . . .â I looked it over carefully. âNo. This oneâs Maxineâs actually.â I pointed to the smeary horse. âSee?â
Sam frowned at it. âOh, yeah, youâre right. I tried my best to fix that.â
âSo, um, can I please put my name on mine so that Maxine and I donât get them confused?â
âSure.â Sam peeled my T-shirt from the pile in his arms. âThat must mean that this one is yours. Oh, no, wait. This one says âMaxâ on it,â
âWhat?â
He leaned down to show me. There, on the front of my shirt near the bottom, just above the hem, were three capital letters in tiny handwriting: MAX.
âBut thatâs wrong!â I blurted. âThis is my shirt! See?â I pointed to the row of horses at the collar. They were all neat and evenly printed.
âOh. Yeah. Well, I guess it was an honest mistake. You know you guys made them look exactly the same.â
âNo, we didnât . . .â I said under my breath. Out loud, I said, âWhat am I going to do? This is written with fabric marker. It wonât wash off!â
âWhy donât you just keep hers and you let her have yours? Theyâre like clones of each other, anyway,â Sam said with a smile.
Why didnât he understand? âNo! I want my shirt! The one I worked on!â I felt tears starting to rise up in my eyes. I blinked them back down.
âOkay, okay,â Sam seemed alarmed to see that I was getting upset. âLetâs see, what are your options? Well, you can scribble it out, but that probably wonât look so good. You can try stamping over it with something. Or we can cut it out. You know, cut an inch off the bottom of the T-shirt.â
I didnât like any of the choices, but they seemed to be the only choices I had.
